Stadt Glarus

Die Stadt Glarus der kleinste Kantonshauptort der Schweiz und gleichnamig wie der Kanton.

Glarus liegt in der geografischen Mitte des gleichnamigen Kantons an der Linth und am Fusse des rund 2300 m hohen Vorderglärnisch. Der höchste Punkt des Gemeindegebiets ist der 2914 m hohe Bächistock, der zum Massiv des Glärnisch gehört. Nachbargemeinden sind die Gemeinden Glarus Nord, Glarus Süd sowie Muotathal und Innerthal (beide Kan­ton Schwyz).

Im Jahr 1861 wütete ein verheerender Grossbrand, der grosse Teile des Ortes zerstörte. Nur wenige Gebäude aus der Zeit vor dem Brand blieben im Stadtbild erhalten. Der Wiederaufbau erfolgte sehr schnell nach einem städtebaulichen Plan, der auf einem rechteckigen Raster beruhte.

The city of Glarus is the smallest canton capital in Switzerland and has the same name as the canton.

Glarus is located in the geographical center of the canton of the same name on the Linth and at the foot of the 2300 m high Vorderglärnisch. The highest point of the municipality is the 2914 m high Bächistock, which belongs to the Glärnisch massif. Neighboring communities are the communities Glarus Nord, Glarus Süd as well as Muotathal and Innerthal (both canton Schwyz).

In 1861 a devastating fire raged, which destroyed large parts of the village. Only a few buildings from the time before the fire remained in the cityscape. The reconstruction took place very quickly according to an urban plan based on a rectangular grid.

Im Rahmen der Glarner Gemeindereform fusionierte Glarus auf den 1. Januar 2011 mit den Gemeinden EnnendaNetstal und Riedern 
zur neuen politischen Gemeinde Glarus.

Das kulturelle Angebot in Glarus ist abwechslungsreich. Insbesondere im Sommer finden regelmässig Konzerte, Openairs und Filmvorführungen auf dem Rathausplatz oder im Volksgarten statt. 2011 war das Gedenkjahr an den Brand von Glarus von 10./11. Mai 1861. Als Erinnerung an dieses einschneidende Grossereignis fanden während des ganzen Jahres diverse Anlässe statt.

As part of the Glarus community reform, Glarus merged on January 1, 2011 with the communities of Ennenda, Netstal and Riedernto the new political municipality Glarus.

The cultural offer in Glarus is varied. In the summer in particular, concerts, open airs and film screenings take place regularly on Rathausplatz or in Volksgarten. 2011 was the year of commemoration of the Glarus fire on 10/11. May 1861. As a reminder of this major event, various events took place throughout the year.
